February 4, 2020
At the February 3 meeting, Parksville Council approved moving forward with the proposed streetscape design for Memorial Avenue. This design will incorporate the values and vision that Parksville residents and property owners along Memorial Avenue identified as important elements to the project.
The proposed design includes an exciting new 9,000 square foot public square. A key component of the City’s downtown revitalization strategy, this space will be utilized year-round and will represent a dynamic venue for residents, visitors, businesses, and community organizations to celebrate and experience downtown Parksville.
Maintaining and enhancing the health of the memorial trees is a priority for the City. Additional space will be allocated to the memorial trees, which will help these hundred-year-old trees thrive for years to come. Pedestrian connectivity will be an important element of the streetscape of Memorial Avenue and vehicular access will be maintained along with street parking.
At the February 3 meeting, Council approved an additional $60,000 to facilitate the additional scope of work required to plan, design and engage the community in 2020 to move forward with the public square concept for Memorial Avenue. It is expected public engagement and final design of the project will occur in 2020 and the estimated cost of the project is about $2 million.
