Banners Honour the Legacy of Parksville’s Veterans
In October and November, commemorative banners are once again displayed along the Island and Alberni highways to honour veterans who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. Now in its sixth year, the annual program pays tribute to those whose names are inscribed on the Parksville Cenotaph, serving as a visible reminder of the sacrifices made by local heroes who answered the call to serve their country. With the addition of three new banners, the program continues to grow in its recognition of local veterans and their service.
This year, the banners were installed in September to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion and to celebrate the centennial of Royal Canadian Legion, Mt. Arrowsmith Branch 49 in Parksville. New poppy banners have also been installed along Memorial Avenue to mark this milestone and will remain in place year-round.
Take some time to explore the touching stories of the World War I and World War II veterans featured on Let’s Talk
Parksville. These profiles represent countless hours of research and help preserve the legacy of those who served. As highlighted in many of the stories, a significant number of local enlistments, especially during World War I, involved young men who had recently arrived from places like the United Kingdom and Australia. Without family connections remaining in the community, finding photographs and historical information has often been a challenge.
Our search for missing information continues. A section on Let’s Talk Parksville highlights veterans for whom photographs or historical details have not yet been found. If you can help fill in the gaps, please contact communications@parksville.ca.
