The Alberni Sidewalk is a pedestrian improvement project that will occur along the Alberni Highway from Bernard Avenue to Lee Avenue. The project scope includes:
Two crosswalks over the Alberni Highway at Bernard Ave. and Hickey Avenue
Construction of almost 500m of new sidewalk along the east side of the Alberni Highway
Addition of streetlights
A required retaining wall in a section between Stanford Avenue West and Marks Avenue.
Two-way traffic is expected to be maintained for the project as much as possible, with periods of single-lane alternating during the day.

At the May 4 meeting, Parksville Council approved the tender award for the construction of Alberni Highway pedestrian improvements to In The Dirt Contracting Ltd for $1,251,305. The improvements will be completed in 2026.
The project was included in the 2025 Transportation Master Plan as a high-priority pedestrian network improvement. The goal of this project is to improve the existing pedestrian experience along the Alberni Highway from Bernard Avenue to Lee Avenue. City staff have worked with Koers & Associates Engineering Ltd since 2025 to develop detailed designs, including geotechnical and electrical components.
Approved by Council in the 2026-2030 financial plan, the project budget was estimated to be $2,309,700 and is now expected to be under budget by about $700,000. Funding sources for this project are development costs charges and the City’s general fund capital reserves. The Council report may be viewed at this link.
